Justin’s Vision

‘An Alameda that is a model community, economically viable, living up to its potential, attracting consumers and businesses from other communities. We have a chance to be an even greater example of what a model city can be. We have the ability and potential, and as a city council, it’s time to achieve this.

“In four years, I want to see protected schools; flourishing small businesses; new large business that keep consumer dollars in Alameda, that create jobs, and that are located wisely to protect our quality of life.”

Issues:
The Naval Air Station (Alameda Point) developed as a mixed use area, blending commercial, residential, tourist, non-profit, and green space applications all served by public transportation. “NAS can become Alameda’s Presidio and then some. It’s time we took action.

Education:
A positive collaboration among the city council, school board, and school district, aimed at well-rounded, quality K-12 education that develops future leaders and an attractive work force, while maintaining and increasing real estate values. “There are ways for the City to create a permanent revenue stream earmarked for non-general education parts of the schools budget.”

A Healthy Business Climate:
“Alameda currently has one of the lowest consumer spending rate per capita in the Bay Area; thus Alameda dollars are going into other communities – not ours”

Small Business:
A sustainable, long-term plan designed to encourage and protect small businesses, thus maintaining our attractive small-town feel. “Let’s make sure that small businesses aren’t forgotten about in this time of growth”

Transportation and Clean Air:
A city-run shuttle service in major areas, stretching from Alameda Point to Webster and Park streets and on to the golf course and airport, all powered by clean energy, and free to Alameda residents and validated shoppers. “This will decrease traffic and parking problems without the need for more parking structures, and contribute to the global effort for cleaner air.”

The City Budget Deficit:

Short-term:
- Aggressively pursue a lucrative and fair resolution to the growing crisis that is the telecom side of AP&T. One solution could be to sell Alameda Telecom to a motivated party willing to continue high quality operations in Alameda.

Longer-term:
- Attract new businesses that keep Alameda consumer dollars in Alameda for an increase in city revenue.
- Invest in raising the quality of Chuck Corica golf complex in order to create a financially viable and competitive area destination.
- Become less dependent on property taxes to subsidize local initiatives.
